A Paralympic athlete has died after being admitted to an intensive care unit on Sunday.

Iranian para-cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, 48, had also competed at the London Paralympics in 2012, where he finished 23rd in the road C4-5.

It has been reported Golbarnezhad collided with a rock during a race, hitting his head.

This triggered a fatal cardiac arrest, which occurred when the athlete was being taken to hospital.

The Iran National Paralympic Committee has confirmed the death, offering their support to the cyclist's team and family.

"Regretfully, IRAN NPC announces that Mr Bahman Golbarnezhad, passed away because of his accident during the competition," they said in a statement.

Supporters and fellow competitors have taken to Twitter to voice their respects.

The International Paralympic Committee will be releasing an official statement shortly.
