A teenage surfer in Australia is recovering in hospital after being bitten by a shark, thought to be a great white.

Seventeen-year-old Cooper Allen was surfing near Ballina, South of the Gold Coast, on Monday morning when he was struck from behind by the 3.5m beast.

Despite multiple bites on his thigh, he managed to make it back to shore with the help of other surfers.

The local surf club described his injuries as "severe lacerations" however he is now understood to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Surf Life Saving NSW lifeguards on jet skis chased the shark away from the shore after the attack.

It's the same beach where a Japanese surfer was killed by a shark last year.
