Scientists have revealed part of the secret to why a small village in southern Italy has an unusual number of centenarians.

More than 10 percent of the town's population are over 100 and scientists believe it is because the golden oldies have low levels of a particular hormone that affects circulation.

At the mayor's last count, Acciaroleo, on the Cilenton coast, has 81 centenarians.

Italian and US experts have found that health benefits of a diet high in olive oil and rich in fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, as well as genetics, could be the key to a long life.
