Elderly Australian woman runs over husband in driveway

An elderly Australian woman accidentally ran over and killed her husband in the driveway of their Melbourne home on Tuesday.

The accident occurred after the 75-year-old man got out of the couple's car at about 1pm to check an unusual sound and asked his wife, 73, to rev the engine.

The car was in gear and lurched forward, killing the man before smashing into a neighbour's house.

Witnesses said the woman was cradling her husband and crying, "I killed you my darling, my sweetheart."

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to revive the man.

The couple had lived together in the Clayton South home for more than 40 years, The Age reported.

Neighbour Andrew Boyadjian told Seven News the woman thought the car was in neutral.

"Whoosh, she just hit him and drove over him," Mr Boyadjian said.

"She went down on her knees blaming herself and saying, 'Don't die, don't die'."

A police investigation into the incident is continuing.
