A group of strangers have banded together to rescue a driver trapped in his flaming car in Florida.

Footage posted to Facebook by the Palm Bay Police and Fire Department shows the strangers forming a human chain in an attempt to pull the crash victim up a steep bank to safety.

The driver of the crashed SUV had become trapped by his seatbelt after his car fell off the road and down the embankment, before catching fire.

Two police officers were also at the scene and helped the strangers pull the man up.

However, the man became violent when the officers tried to pull him from the vehicle, repeatedly telling officers he did not need any help. The officers were forced to Taser and handcuff him during the rescue, before transporting him to hospital with minor injuries.

Several of the strangers were left with cuts and burns from the incident.
