Dramatic video has captured the moment bystanders rushed to rescue a woman from her sinking SUV after she accidentally drove into a pond in Arlington, Massachusetts.

The footage, taken from the shore and released by the Arlington Police Department, shows three people swimming out to the woman's Ford Edge.

After several minutes, the vehicle sinks below the water line.

Just after the car becomes submerged, the woman surfaces and a second person helps bring her to shore.

Arlington Police said the 68-year-old driver was taken to an area hospital with mild hypothermia. She was conscious and alert after being pulled from the water and police described her as "cold, but otherwise unhurt".

Police say the woman was trying to back into a parking space on Linwood Circle when she drove over a curb and plunged into the pond.

The SUV sunk to the bottom of the pond. Out of "an abundance of caution", a police dive team is searching to make sure the vehicle is unoccupied.

No further details on the incident are currently available.
