Aleppo prepares for violence as Russian humanitarian deadline passes

There's a sense of grim inevitability in Aleppo tonight – that war is about to get worse.  Russian might and strategy is clearly in play, with their soldiers at all the key points.

Aleppo has been a key battleground over the past four years of fighting. It has been split roughly in half, with rebel forces controlling the east, and government troops and their Russian allies, the west.

Both sides have accused each other shelling incidents in the past few days. Today the Castello Road – the main route in and out of the eastern part of the city for any exodus of those trapped there – was also targeted.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy went out Friday morning, as what was billed as a humanitarian window was just opening.
