Love was well and truly in the air over the weekend, with footage emerging of a pilot proposing to his girlfriend mid-flight emerging on social media.

The video, which was captured on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles, shows Captain Dooley Ellis making a romantic announcement over the intercom before embarking on the proposal.

"We have a very special passenger on board today, folks - her name is Anna," he said over the A380's PA system, to the 800 passengers onboard.

"She's travelling back to South America now to visit her family and I want to make sure she comes back to me in Australia."

He then popped the question in Spanish, Anna's native tongue.

"Now that I have her complete attention: quieres casarte conmigo? Will you marry me?"

Captain Ellis, who has been a Qantas pilot for 30 years, then made his way to first class with a bouquet of flowers, where his partner Anna was waiting in tears.

She paused, before answering his question with a resounding 'yes' and launching into a tender kiss. He then carefully placed the ring on her finger.

The clip has been a hit online, racking up more than 200,000 views on Facebook alone in the 10 hours since it was posted.
