Thick fog is believed to be partially to blame for a massive pile-up in China that left at least four people dead and 40 injured.

Nine of those injuries are critical, and a number of vehicles involved were on the verge of toppling off a bridge before a crane was brought in.

A whopping 37 vehicles were involved in the crash on an expressway linking Beijing and Kunming, in the Shanxi Province in northern China.

The pile-up occurred at about 9am (local time) on Monday.

The cause of the collision is not yet known, but the heavy fog and slippery roads that often blight the region at this time of year are seen as key contributors.
