Kiwis in Indonesia warned to stay away from crowds

Kiwi travellers in Indonesia are being warned to be on high alert on Friday with protests planned across the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is advising New Zealanders to avoid all demonstrations, rallies and large crowds as they have the potential to turn violent with little warning.

Security forces in Jakarta are at the ready as hardline Islamists plan to rise up against the capital city's non-Muslim governor.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is an ethnic Chinese and Christian, and has led the city since 2014.

He's been accused of blasphemy after criticising opponents for referencing a verse in the Qur'an that warns against allying with Christians and Jews.
