The female subject of this week's wild Melbourne Cup photos that went viral is, as it turns out, a Kiwi.

Jade Jillings, of Palmerston North, hit headlines around the world when she tried to ride a wheelie bin like a horse at the iconic race event.

She was only known as 'wheelie bin girl', until she broke her silence and was interviewed with her flatmate Tyler Johnson on Australian TV show The Project.

"At the end of the day we were having a laugh," she said.

Ms Jillings, who works as a stable hand in Melbourne, acknowledged the criticism of her antics, but brushed it off.

She was interviewed on Thursday at another racing event - the Oaks Day at Flemington Racecourse. Co-host Carrie Bickmore asked if she's been recognised.

"A few people have said 'welcome back'," Ms Jillings said.

Her flatmate Mr Johnson said the horsing around was all good fun and didn't cause any trouble.

"I feel like that's what racing is about. We didn't harm anyone," he said.
