Protests against Donald Trump have broken out across the United States after the Republican candidate won the US presidential election.

Calls of "not my President" and "f*ck Trump" could be heard on the streets of Portland as hundreds of people lit fires and stopped traffic on a major highway.

On the West Coast, demonstrators set fire to a likeness of Mr Trump, smashed storefront windows and set rubbish and tyres on fire in downtown Oakland.

A few kilometres away, students from the University of California protested on the Berkley campus holding Mexican and LGBTQ flags.

Students blocked streets as they marched and chanted anti-Trump slogans, including: "You are not America, we are America."

According to local media, Portland protesters have now gone to the local university to "plan for tomorrow".
