US President-elect Donald Trump has called a request for a recount of votes in Wisconsin a "scam" by the Green Party and says even his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton says the election results should be accepted.

"This is a scam by the Green Party for an election that has already been conceded, and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused, which is exactly what [Green Party leader] Jill Stein is doing," Trump said in a statement about the recount on Saturday.

"This recount is just a way for Jill Stein, who received less than one per cent of the vote overall and wasn't even on the ballot in many states, to fill her coffers with money, most of which she will never even spend on this ridiculous recount," Mr Trump said.

Meanwhile, Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign have confirmed they will take part in the Wisconsin vote recount.

Marc Elias, the Clinton campaign counsel, said the campaign would take part in the recount "in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides."

Mr Elias believes Clinton's campaign should be legally represented in Wisconsin so they are able to monitor the recount.

Although Donald Trump won the Electoral College tally to become President, Ms Clinton has a lead in the popular vote by over 2 million ballots.
