Camels strut their stuff for UAE beauty pageant

  • 18/12/2016

When you think of a beauty pageant, you expect the contestants to be leggy and doe-eyed, but perhaps not of the four-legged variety.

But the judging criteria for the annual Al-Dhafra Camel Festival are a little different from usual.

Dozens of camel owners from across the United Arab Emirates gathered to compare and celebrate the animals.

Contestants are judged on the size of their feet, the fastest movers and on the milk they produce.

In another departure from typical beauty contests, the unfortunate losers are served for dinner that night.

The festival is an important auction market for purebred camels, with award-winning animals fetching high prices.
