Police in India have arrested a man for allegedly sexually harassing a New Zealand teen who was trying on a dress at a store.

Local media report the garment shop salesman was arrested on Wednesday (local time) in the Cantt area of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, North India.

The man was charged under a section of the law regarding "assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty".

The store was inside the hotel where the 16-year-old was staying with a group of New Zealanders on a cultural studies tour, The Indian Express reports.

The hotel's management laid a complaint with local police after the girl told her friends and tour guide about the incident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted to confirm the details.
