A Californian man who stole US$4.8 million from his employer blew $1 million of it on Game of War: Fire Age.

Kevin Lee Co, an accounting manager, pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering on Thursday (local time).

According to the US Attorney's Office, Co used money he stole to buy luxury cars, furniture, season passes to the NBA and NFL, and "spent approximately $1 million on player fees for an online video game".

US media reports say that game was Game of War: Fire Age, which is technically free, but players can spend real money on upgrades.

Supermodel Kate Upton and singer Mariah Carey featured in TV advertisements for the game in 2014.

Co faces up to 20 years in prison and US$500,000 in fines.
