An unexpected mid-air delivery forced a passenger flight to make an emergency landing in the United States on Sunday.

The plane was on its way from Philadelphia to Orlando when a pregnant passenger went into labour.

The baby was born mid-flight and the plane made an emergency landing in Charleston, South Carolina.

"Medical personnel onboard assisted with the delivery," Southwest spokeswoman Melissa Ford said in a statement. "Emergency medical technicians met the flight upon landing and transported the parents and baby to an area hospital."

The sound of the baby's first cries was caught on camera by another passenger, journalist Izzy Gould, who shared the moment on Twitter.
