Two people have been killed and more than 1000 forced to leave their homes after a mudslide in Argentina on Wednesday (local time).

Heavy rains caused the avalanche on the Quebrada de Humahuaca mountains in Jujuy, a northwestern Argentine province.

The main road in and out of the town Volcan was covered by a wall of mud, water and rocks, killing a man and a woman travelling in their vehicle at the time.

Military personnel are assisting local residents with clean-up and the road remains closed.
