Large earthquake strikes off Philippines

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has shaken the Philippines, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was centred in the Celebes Sea, southeast of the island Jolo, and was around 630km deep.

It struck around 7:13pm on Tuesday (NZ time).

No tsunami alert has been issued and there have been no immediate reports of damage.
