Security officials have managed to separate US President Donald Trump from his beloved smartphone.

Mr Trump has been forced to surrender his Android device in favour of a new encrypted phone that he must use while in office.

Officials have also told the president to stop using the Twitter handle @RealDonaldTrump and to use @POTUS (which stands for President of the United States).

Mr Trump doesn’t email, but he uses his phone to tweet — something he’s made clear he plans to continue in office, the New York Times reported.

He’s known to be on his phone at all hours, often seeking input from multiple sources when making a decision.

It’s a rare occasion that Mr Trump could be said to be following in former president Barack Obama’s shoes – Mr Obama reluctantly surrendered his Blackberry for an encrypted device when he became president.
