Half-tonne woman lifted into hospital by crane

An Egyptian woman reported to weigh 500kg has been lifted by a crane into hospital for treatment.

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty arrived in Mumbai on Saturday to be treated at Saifee Hospital by bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala.

She was transported from Mumbai Airport to the hospital in a makeshift bed that was placed in the back of a truck.

Once at the hospital, a crane was used to lift her bed up to a window.

The Indian embassy in Cairo had originally denied Abd El Aty a visa as she was unable to travel to the country in person.

But she was granted permission after Dr Lakdawala tweeted about her case to India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who intervened in her favour.
