A Flamin' Hot Cheetos chip in the shape of Harambe, the internet-famous gorilla which was killed last year, has sold for nearly US$100,000 on eBay.

Harambe, a Western lowland gorilla, became an internet sensation in May 2016 after he was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a three-year-old boy fell into its enclosure.

The late ape was widely mourned and his death spurred a host of memes spread far and wide across the internet.

Hoping to cash in on the fame, seller valuestampsinc posted a listing on eBay earlier this month for a Flamin' Hot Cheeto vaguely resembling Harambe.

The price of the chip quickly skyrocketed with more than 100 joining the race to bid for it.

The bidding began at US$11.99 and ended on Wednesday (local time) with a finishing bid of US$99,900 after receiving 132 bids.

"I opened up a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos and as soon as I looked inside I came across this unique Cheetos that looks like Harambe the gorilla," the eBay listing read.

The buyer has only asked for the Harambe cheeto; they weren't interested in the rest of the bag.
