A lonely 75-year-old man, who became a sensation after posting an ad looking for a friend to go fishing with, has been treated to an all-expenses-paid fishing trip with his new mates from Queensland.

Ray Johnstone's ad on classifieds site Gumtree was picked up by the public and Australian media, causing a flurry of offers for a fishing date and sparking a new hashtag #IllFishWithRay.

"My name is Ray Johnstone. Australian. I'm a widowed pensioner who is looking for a fishing mate. My previous mate is now deceased," the advert reads.

"I am a land-based fisherman. I have all the gear for all types of fish that is required for land-based fishing. What I want is a fishing mate in a similar position to myself who also wants someone to go fishing with.

"I am willing to share all costs, e.g. petrol, bait, and should you happen to own a boat, [I'm] willing to pay all ramp fees, but happy if you are also a land-based fisherman."

Brisbane brothers Peter and Mati Batsinilas called Mr Johnstone on his phone last week, asking if he'd like to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to their favourite fishing spot, Stradbroke Island.

He duly agreed, and 7 News in Australia were invited along for the journey to film the experience as it unfolded yesterday.

The day appeared to be one packed-full of joyous moments, with Mr Johnstone and the Batsinilas spending the day fishing, relaxing, posing for selfies and high-fiving.

And Mr Johnstone was clearly very appreciative of the brothers' kindness.

"Thank you for all you've done. I really appreciate it," he is seen telling Mati.
