Mexico will not accept Trump immigration proposals

Mexico's president Enrique Peña Nieto meets US president Donald Trump

Mexico will not accept new "unilateral" US immigration proposals, and will not hesitate in approaching the United Nations to defend immigrants, the country's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray says, ahead of a meeting with senior US officials.

Videgaray said on Wednesday the new US proposals would be the main point of discussion for upcoming meetings, which will take place between Mexican officials, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on Wednesday and Thursday.

This comes after Pope Francis used a conference in Rome to call for a radical change in attitude toward immigrants.
