In an obscure case, a postman in Northern Ireland has expressed "enormous shame and regret" after being caught repeatedly placing his genitals into a letterbox.

Dave Camblin, 52, pleaded guilty at Fermangh Magistrates Court to three counts of damaging a door and floor between February and August 2016, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

Camblin was caught out after a man became suspicious about a 'puddle' inside the front door of his late mother's house.

He installed a CCTV camera to investigate, and the footage revealed a man pulling up in a courier van, placing his private parts through the letterbox, and proceeding to commit an unsanitary act.

A second incident a week later was also caught on camera.

The owner claimed he had paid over £1000 (NZ$1728) to fix the door, £500 (NZ$864) to install CCTV, and said he had been unable to rent the property as a result of the "problem".

Camblin's solicitor Rory Gillen said this was the first time there had been a problem in his 21 years with the courier company, adding that after being suspended his client had since resigned.

His wife of 17 years is now supporting him.

In the pre-sentence report, deputy district judge Philip Mateer described the circumstances as "simply inexplicable" and said Camblin acted in a "bizarre and distasteful fashion".

The judge imposed a Combination Order, involving 12 months' probation and 100 hours' community service, Camblin was ordered to pay £500 (NZ$864) compensation to the owner of the house.
