An Arizona single mother said her "heart sank" when she found a notice from her son's school saying they were have a "dads and doughnuts" day.

According to KUTV, Whitney Kittrell asked her son if he wanted grandpa to go to which her son replied," No. I want you to go. You're my mum and dad."

Not wanting to let her boy down she dug out the best 'dad' outfit and donned a fake moustache and beard.

Ms Kittrell posted a photo and her son on Facebook, a post that has been liked more than 7000 times.

"I was so embarrassed but I couldn't help but smile when he introduced me to his little friends saying, "this is my mom ... she's my dad too so I brought her!"

Ms Kittrell said her son appreciated her effort.

"When I went to leave he ran after me and hugged me tight around my neck and whispered, "mom, I know that you'll always be there and do anything for me. Thank you. I love you."

Ms Kittrell says he gave her a kiss before going to play with friends.

"I hope he remembers this day, 'cause I'll never forget it or his sweet words."

She says, through her actions, she hopes her son can learn a lot and not follow in his father's footsteps.

"Being a single parent, or any parent for that matter, is a hard job. We are all doing the best we can," she says.
