US teacher 'inspires' students with personalised handshakes

A North Carolina teacher who prides his teaching on "meaningful relationships" has a unique morning ritual for each of his students - personalised handshakes.

Millions have seen the footage of passionate intermediate school teacher Barry White Jr after a video emerged of him and his students as they line up single file to enter the classroom.

Mr White teaches English to 40 students aged 10-11 years old at Ashley Park PreK-8 School in Charlotte.

In the two years he's been at the school, he's learned 40 different handshakes.

"It really just started with me really just trying to bring joy to my students and then now it's blown up," he told NBC news.

The one-of-a-kind teacher is a huge basketball fan and says he got the idea from Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who performs pre-game handshakes with each of his teammates.

But the handshake phenomenon has become more than just a fun way to enter his classroom; many of his students come from low-income families and going to school excites them about education and their future.

Student Zyhir Williams told NBC she felt "inspired and so welcome in his class."
