Fans of Kate and William, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, may have noticed the couple rarely show affection for each other in public.

There is no official "hands-off" protocol, but body language and royal etiquette experts seem to have come to a consensus as to why the keep their hands to themselves in public.

The theory is that, like most couples who work together, the pair like keep a professional distance while on official business.

They have been captured showing affection at casual events, such as sports games. But when on official visits, they are more likely to stand side-by-side, hands clasped in front.

Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told People it's because they are on the job.

"The likely reasoning is more that while traveling on a tour such as the India trip, technically the couple are working representatives of the British monarchy. The couple are likely to show very little [public displays of affection], if any, to remain professional during their designated roles abroad."

It's probable that they are following in the Queen's footsteps.

Robin Kermode, body language expert from media coaching company Zone2.co.uk says the lack of affection doesn't appear to reflect issues in the couple's relationship.

"The Queen rarely holds hands with her husband in public, and this seems to have set an unwritten precedent for the other royals.

"It is very clear that William and Kate are emotionally close, however, they do not seem to feel the need to prove their love - particularly when on official state business."

He says politicians and celebrities often use handholding to signal their relationship to media.

Sometimes that can go a little too far - as demonstrated by US President Donald Trump.

"He is holding onto the hands of world leaders too long and you can see people literally trying to pull their hands away. William and Kate are definitely not in that sphere!"
