An Australian man's died after an incident at an airport in the Thai capital Bangkok.

Thai authorities say 32-year-old Alan Paul Grimes took an escalator to the fourth floor of the terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport and then jumped over a railing, plunging to the ground floor.

He was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.

Mr Grimes held Australian and Irish passports, Newscorp reported.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The airport's safety director told the Bangkok Post similar incidents had occurred before, prompting the installation of 2.5m-high glass safety walls.

Mr Grimes managed to avoid them, and the construction of additional walls has been ordered.
