Two small planes collided mid-air over a large shopping centre in Canada on Friday (local time), leaving one person dead and three injured.

The crash happened over the Promenades Saint-Bruno, south of Montreal.

One smashed into a carpark, and the other slammed into the mall's roof.

Police say each plane carried just one pilot each, and there were no passengers on board. One pilot is dead, and the other is recovering in hospital.

Two onlookers suffered stress-related injuries.

Quebec Public Safety Minister Martin Coiteux gave his "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims.
