'Rape and incest are the will of God' - US lawmaker

A Republican lawmaker is facing online backlash for saying rape and incest are God's will and not an excuse for an abortion during a discussion about a pro-life bill.

The Oklahoma House of Representatives was having a heated conversation about abortion. Current rules in the state prohibit women from terminating a pregnancy unless their own health is at risk.

Conservative George Faught was asked whether he thought babies conceived as a result of rape should be allowed to be terminated.

"Well, you know, if you read the Bible there's actually a couple of circumstances where that happened and the Lord uses all circumstances. I mean you can get on that path, but it's a reality unfortunately.

"God can bring beauty out of ashes, as he has time and time again."

When Representative Cory William asked if incest was also God's will, Faught said: "Same answer."

The internet is less than impressed with Mr Faught, who said while rape and incest "may not have been the best thing that ever happened" to someone, it's all part of God's plan.

Many internet users were riled up at the conservative Christian, who has a locked Twitter account.

"Guys, we seriously live in a state with people like George Faught saying violent crimes against women are ok, because God might be into it," one wrote.

"Describing rape as something that "may not have been the best thing that ever happened" trivialises abuse of women," another added.

"What kind of sick God are ya'll worshiping that thinks rape & incest is ok to bring upon women so they can be breeding stock?" a third wrote.
