An octopus' joy ride on a dolphin has turned out to be its last.

The extraordinary encounter between predator and prey was photographed by an Australian cruise company, involving one of the Port Macquarie area's resident river dolphins.

The eight-legged creature is seen attaching itself near "Grandma's" dorsal fin before being taken for a wild ride.

Grandma leaps out of the water to try and dislodge her next meal.

The company, Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures, north of Sydney, says Grandma eventually won the battle.

"In the end she got it off and ate it."
