Ex-Subway pitchman Jared Fogle has been beaten up in prison because he is treated like royalty by fellow paedophiles, his attacker says.

"Jared is their hero," 61-year-old inmate Steve Nigg said in a letter obtained by the TMZ website.

He assaulted Fogle in 2016. Fogle is serving 15 years after admitting to possessing child pornography and crossing state lines to pay for sex with minors.

Fogle was previously the face of Subway, after losing 200 pounds in weight by only eating at the global sandwich chain.

He was arrested following a raid on his Indiana home in 2015, and was ordered to pay 14 victims a share of US$1.4 million in restitution.

"You would not believe how arrogant Jared was," Nigg wrote.

"He hired bodyguards and the other child molesters looked at him as if he was a god."

Last year Nigg jumped Fogle in the recreation area at Englewood prison in Colorado, leaving him with a bloody nose, swollen face and scratches on his neck.

Nigg, who's locked up on weapons charges, has been moved to another prison.

"I have no regrets," he says.
