Two teenagers were killed in a freak accident as they took a selfie beside a runway in Mexico.

Nitzia Mendoza Corral, 18, and Clarissa Morquecho Miranda, 17, were standing in a van recording a video selfie when the accident occurred, The Daily Mirror reports.

They were hit by the wing of a descending aircraft, and were parked beside a landing strip after attending a horse race adjacent to the airport.

They are said to have ignored the warnings of witnesses that the area was dangerous.

Nitzia was a law student and Clarissa was in her last year of high school according to local media.

The accident took place in Chinipas, Chihuahua, and local authorities are investigating the cause.

The pilot's identity hasn't been released and it's unclear how the plane became so close to the vehicle.
