A United States family has been left shattered after the deaths of two sons, within six weeks of each other.

Indiana couple Julia and Peter Roberts lost their two-year-old William when he went wandering and drowned in a creek near the family home in January.

Searchers spent 12 hours combing the family property until the boy was found face down in the water, Ms Roberts told InsideEdition.com.

Six weeks later on March 8, their six-year-old son Ayden was killed in a horrific car crash as his father Peter drove him to school.

"I don't know what to do from here," Ms Roberts said.

Her husband is struggling to cope, she said. "He's having a real hard time."

Mr Roberts was driving Ayden to school when he veered toward a ditch and overcorrected.

The swerve sent the car into oncoming traffic, and two vehicles slammed into Mr Roberts' car.

"The dad got out of the car and said, 'Where's my boy?' Said he had been asleep in the back seat and the back of the car was gone. It was on the other side of the road," neighbour Janie Miller told WLKY.com.

Mr Roberts blames himself for Ayden's death and is wracked by guilt, after getting away with only minor injuries, his wife said.

Ayden would try to cheer up his mother after his little brother had drowned.

"He was such a sweet boy. Last week, I was crying and he said, 'Mommy, don't cry'.

"They loved each other so much. They were best friends. They loved playing together."

A Gofundme page has been set up to help the family.
