A young autistic boy was savagely beaten and kicked in the head on a Melbourne bus in an attempted robbery.

The 17-year-old victim was attacked by a Sudanese gang for his phone and his shoes, and left concussed and distressed.

Video shot on the bus on Saturday shows the moment the gang struck. The teen was ordered to hand over his sneakers and phone. However he refused, and was subjected to a violent assault.

It's not the first time the teen has been targeted.

"I'm one of the kids that, like, that gets bullied all the time," he told reporters.

One teen has been charged with attempted robbery and assault, but the victim still doesn't feel safe.

"I'm scared to leave my front door," he says.

"I'm scared to walk the streets. And I just - I want that freedom."
