US Bachelor star Chris Soules will face criminal charges after he allegedly caused a fatal crash and fled the scene.

The 35-year-old was driving a pickup truck on a rural road in Iowa on Monday when he rear-ended a tractor, pushing it into a ditch.

The tractor's driver, 66-year-old Kenneth Mosher, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, local police say.

Soules, the Iowa farmer who starred in the US version of the love-seeking television show in 2015, was found at his home and arrested early on Tuesday morning. He was not hurt in the crash.

Court papers reveal Soules had alcohol in the vehicle, but it is not clear if he was intoxicated at the time.

Witnesses told local police Soules had caused the crash and fled the scene.

He has been released on bond and must wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet until his trial.

His first appearance on national television was as a participant in 2014's The Bachelorette. He did not win, but his popularity saw him soon return as the star of The Bachelor.
