Fatal tornado rips through east Texas city

Several deadly tornadoes have swept through east Texas, mangling trees and overturning cars in the streets.

Video of one of the tornadoes striking the city of Canton was captured by Jody Vincik, who was driving down a motorway around 32km away.

The dark plume can be seen passing through the city, dragging across the horizon.

Canton Fire Department Captain Brian Horton said a "number of fatalities" have been reported, while dozens of people have been taken to hospitals.

Resident Ernestine Cook told WFAA News she had been living there for 22 years and had never seen anything like it.

"It hit so hard, so fast. It just kept moving," she said.

The extent of the damage is not yet clear.

Canton is a small city in the eastern part of Texas, around 80km east of Dallas.
