Drinking more than four pints in one night can increase the risk of heart failure and strokes, a study in Germany has found.

A research team who attended the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, found that level of drinking can destabilise the heart's natural rhythm, which can lead to more serious long-term heart conditions, The Telegraph reported.

Scientists monitored more than 3000 drinkers during the 16-day long drinking festival where they found people without any previous history of heart problems developed irregular heartbeats as a result.

However they also found those who drink to that level as a one-off had a decreased effect.

Millions of people from around the world attend Oktoberfest each year. In 2013 nearly 8 million litres of beer was sold.
