A Melbourne man has been arrested after allegedly dropping his phone while stealing from a chemist, then calling it to get it back.

According to Victoria Police, the man dropped his phone while allegedly nicking a basket full of items.

When he later called the phone to try and find it, police officers answered.

They arranged to meet up with him and return the phone, where they then arrested him.

He's been charged with several counts of shop theft, attempted shop theft and trafficking heroin.

But the bumbling criminal wasn't alone - police are still trying to track down his "partner in crime".

It's believed the duo may have been responsible for similar thefts across Melbourne since early March.
