Tributes have flowed in for the family of five-year-old Maria-Susana Vaafusuaga, who died after being hit by a truck on her way home from school in Australia.

Maria-Susana was crossing the road when she was hit, her mother just metres away.

The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon after Maria-Susana, also known as Sana, finished her day at Tacoma Public School in the New South Wales town of Wyong.

Her mother Salafai Loimata simply wrote, " Love you so much" on Facebook, and others also offered their condolences.

"Rest in peace Sana we miss your smiling beautiful face," one person wrote.

According to the Daily Mail, Ms Loimata and one other person were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police said the truck driver will take a mandatory drug and alcohol test following the accident.
