A woman who tried to kill off the victim and witness of her husband's sexual abuse crimes while he was in jail has been sentenced to a prison term.

The couple were caught out by an undercover police officer who was acting as a hit man, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

In 2015, Mary Fatima Katic gave a hitman $25,000 to "get rid of" the 14-year-old girl sexually abused by her husband Antun, as well as a teenage witness of the abuse.

She left her husband in 2014 after herself suffering years of domestic abuse, however complied with his plot to kill them as she feared for herself and her family if she did not comply.

However, the 'hitman' was an undercover police officer, who had been tipped off by an inmate that Antun was planning to kill the two teenagers off.

Mary Fatima Katic told the undercover officer that the girl should be told who ordered her killing, so she would know "I should've kept my mouth shut".

Last week she was sentenced in the Wollongong District Court to six years and nine months jail with a non-parole period of four years.

Her husband Antun Ivan Katic will be sentenced in June for trying to have the teenagers killed, and for sexually abusing the 14-year-old.

He is known to be abusive, including to his wife who left him in 2014, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Shortly after she left, Antun Ivan Katic began abusing the 14-year-old.
