A Dutch teenager who planned a holiday to Sydney for the summer didn't quite get the golden beaches and sun-kissed tan he anticipated.

Milan Schipper, 18, stepped off his plane from Amsterdam into a Canadian blizzard, 16,000km from his planned destination.

Mr Schipper first realised something was wrong when he saw the size of the plane, but he boarded it anyway.

"I saw the flight plan was going to go right, not left. It was about the time that I realized there was another Sydney," he told Canadian show As It Happens.

"I think I [swore] in my head for like 10 minutes. But there was nothing I could do about it because I was already up in the air."

Mr Schipper didn't stay for long - making a round trip straight back to his amused family and friends.

It turns out the other Sydney, in Nova Scotia, has fooled customers before - and a woman on his plane had made the same mistake.
