Watch: Slow-motion ocean commotion as ferry ploughs into pier

A massive ferry has ploughed into a pier on the holiday island of Gran Canaria, in Spain's Canary Islands.

Five people were taken to hospital after the spectacular accident, which was caught on video uploaded to Facebook by Los Jardineros.

There were 140 passengers and 30 crew on board when it happened on Friday night (Spain time), as well as dozens of cars.

Five others were treated for minor injuries at the scene, including a pregnant woman who suffered a panic attack, local media reports.

It's believed the ship suffered engine failure, the crew unable to steer it to safety.

Environmental teams are now trying to clean up the resulting oil slick, caused when the ship ruptured underwater fuel pipes.

The ship was meant to be headed for the neighbouring island of Tenerife.
