Chelsea Manning has uploaded a photo of her new look, a day after being released from a military prison.

In a posts to Twitter and Instagram, Ms Manning showed off a pixie cut, red lipstick and a blue low-cut top.

"Okay, so here I am everyone!! =P," the former prisoner wrote.

In a court-martial in 2013, Ms Manning was convicted of releasing classified information to WikiLeaks. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but her sentence was commuted by outgoing US President Barack Obama before he left office in January.

At the time she was known as Bradley, but began transitioning to female in 2013. She was not allowed to grow her hair long, but did get hormone treatment approved, after a lengthy delay.

On Thursday (NZ time) she tweeted a photo of her Chuck Taylor shoes, taking her first steps after being released.

Social media users responded with the hashtag #ChucksforChelsea and posting photos of themselves wearing the shoes.
