Donald Trump and the glowing orb: What's really going on

An image of US President Donald Trump with his hands on a crystal ball has quickly become a meme on social media.

Mr Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Saudi Arabia's King Salman are lit from below by the glowing orb, in a scene that's been compared to the summoning of an ancient evil, or a shady ceremony straight out of the fevered imagination of an Alex Jones-style conspiracy theorist.

The truth is perhaps much less interesting. The trio of world leaders were actually taking part in the opening ceremony for the Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Mr Trump had just shared the ball with wife Melania, but it was the sight of three powerful men standing in darkness, their hands across a "fiery" globe that got Twitter excited.

Some compared it to the scene in a superhero film where the bad guys announce their plot to enslave the world.

World of Warcraft director Duncan Jones suggested what might have happened if the orb was electrified.

Arrested Development and Lego Batman star Will Arnett posited the ball was telling them what to do.

The bizarre scene comes a day after Mr Trump was filmed dancing with a group of sword-wielding Saudis.
