Dozens injured in Melbourne tram crash

A truck and a tram collided in north Melbourne on Monday morning, leaving 29 people injured - with 14 of those requiring treatment in hospital.

In the jarring crash, the tram careened into the lorry and was pushed several metres off the tracks, while the truck tipped onto its side and leaked diesel on the road at about 8am (local time).

Paramedics treated 29 people for what are mostly minor injuries, according to local media reports.

"The tram has been derailed so Yarra Trams heavy maintenance will attend to put the tram back on its tracks," an MFB statement read.

The clean-up is expected to take hours, and commuters have been warned that the tram is unlikely to be reopened in time for the afternoon's peak-hour traffic.

The crash follows another, less serious accident involving a truck and a tram just 30 minutes earlier, in central Melbourne.
