Intense turbulence injures five on AirAsia flight

Footage has emerged of the terrifying moment a 300-seater plane experienced such strong turbulence that five people had to be treated by paramedics upon landing.

Passenger Jonathan Liaw captured the video on his phone while travelling with AirAsia X between Taipei, Taiwan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday (local time).

It shows frightened passengers perching on the ground to avoid being thrown around by the powerful shaking, swearing with fear.

At one point an air hostess can be heard assuring passengers they are safe and the plane will come out of the turbulence soon.

However another flight attendant, seated next to the man filming, can be heard mumbling with fear as they sit in the crew area amongst spilt food and drink.

At the end of the video, amid crying from fellow passengers, passenger rise together and attempt to make it back to their seats quickly, before more turbulence knocks them over.

Five people were treated by medical staff upon landing, while "all other passengers were attended to by ground staff and provided with necessary assistance", AirAsia said.

It is not known how serious the injuries sustained by the five who received treatment were.
