A man who was high on a synthetic drug in the United Kingdom has cut off his own nose.

Police were called to a house in the city of Birmingham where they found a man covered in blood.

The man also mutilated other parts of his body while under the influence.

According to the Daily Mail, the man had to be restrained so he could be carried down stairs to receive medical attention.

One officer described the incident as one the worst he'd seen in more than 25 years.

Police who attended the incident in October 2016 have been recognised for their part in saving the man's life.

Local police inspector Mat Minton said the officers all did a brilliant job.

"They were met with the sight of someone who'd mutilated himself and was outwardly displaying hostility and aggression."

The synthetic drug identified as 'Black Mamba' is a synthetic cannabis that has a similar effect to natural cannabis but is more potent and carries a stronger reaction leading to consumers hallucinating in some cases.
