Eric Trump roasted on Twitter for saying Democrats are 'not even people'

The son of US President Donald Trump has been slammed by celebrities and a swathe of social media users after suggesting Democrats are "not even people" in an interview with Fox News.

In a heated rant at the very start of the interview, Eric Trump took aim at those who had criticised his father's administration and mocked the Democratic Party for their alleged lack of leadership.

"I've never seen hatred like this. To me, they're not even people. It's so, so sad," Mr Trump told host Sean Hannity.

"I mean, morality is just gone. Morals have flown out the window. We deserve so much better than this as a country. You know, it's so sad. You see the Democratic Party - they're imploding, they're imploding.

"They have no message, so what do they try and do? They try and obstruct a great man, they try and obstruct his family, they come after us viciously - and it's truly, truly horrible."

The remarks are sure to have gone down well with most of Fox News' predominantly conservative audience - but they were also widely shared on social media, where they were picked up by people less sympathetic to the Republican cause.

It wasn't long before the comments were brought to the attention of a number of celebrities - including Mark Hamill and Sarah Silverman, who took to Twitter to express their indignation.

Others were quick to back them up, with some latching onto Hamill's tweet, which focused on Trump's sons' fondness for shooting endangered wild animals.

Still others focused on his dehumanisation of Democrats, comparing it to Hitler's attitude toward Jews and the Hutus' stance on Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide.

Eric Trump has yet to respond to any of the vitriol directed at him since the interview.
